Why we made this website?

A view looking upward of the amazing steel structure of the roof.

  • Our 105 yr-old Tabernacle at Oakdale Nature Preserve that is 2.8 miles south of Freeport, holds so many memories for people in our community. It's also on the Landmark Illinois 2018 Endangered List because it's one of a kind.
  • The Freeport Park District Board of Commissioners has taken an illegal vote to demolish the Tabernacle. The State Attorney's office says they did not notice the public correctly when they voted on January 7th.
  • As of Feb 9th, the Tabernacle is still standing. We are still fighting. We will continue to fight but we need your help. We cannot do this alone. This website will give you the information you need to get involved and use your voices.
  • Why should we save it? Old buildings have value because you can't reproduce the character of old buildings no matter how hard you try.
  • What else? Old buildings often have some great components that would cost an arm and a leg to build today. Our Tabernacle has a unique octagon-shaped steel framed roof structure that is in amazing shape.
  • And on the last note, we know that reusing old buildings adds character to individual buildings, but above that, it adds character and contributes to the identity of whole cities. It's what will make people currently driving by our city on their way to Galena, stop and choose Freeport

The Issues

Let's Talk About Fiscal Responsibility

Additional Information

The Park District has spent a lot of money on plans for the Tabernacle. As far as we can see, the reports were accepted and filed away. Why? This makes no sense. They say no one goes to Oakdale but they do not take care of it and they do not market it. Check out the minutes, they do not appear to discuss the plans they purchase. The Save the Tabernacle group has attended over 75% of the meetings since November 2017 and there is extremely little discussion ever taking place unless of course, it's about the beloved golf course. I'm talking about the golf course that has lost money continuously over the past five years. The one that season passes has decreased by 25% in the past 3 years. Golf isn't what the vast majority of Freeport citizens do. We figure less than 1% of our population golf. When the Commissioners tell you they are razing the Tabernacle because they are trying to represent the minority and be fiscally responsible, why don't those same standards exist for money spent at the 32 hole, yes, 32 hole Golf Course?

How can I help?

image19

Call AND email the Freeport Park District Board Commissioners and ask them to reconsider their vote. Any one of them can bring this back to the floor for a revote.

Tell your friends. Write a Letter to the Editor

We talk to people every day that are not aware of the grave danger the Tabernacle is in. Join our group on Facebook called Friends of the Freeport Park District. Then be sure to tell your friends, neighbors and coworkers. Email them. Consider writing a Letter to the Editor.

Attend the next Board meeting

The next scheduled Board meeting is March 3rd, 2020 at 6:30 pm. This is the most important meeting you can attend. Our hope, of course, is that they bring up a new vote and change their minds and start talking to the group that wants to repair and keep the Tabernacle.

Make a Pledge or Donation/Petition today

We have entered into a period where we may need real cash to keep the Tabernacle standing. Details to follow. If you can pledge now, click on the form below. No pledge is too small or too big. Thank you for your support.

You can also make a donation here through GoFundMe. We're using it as a petition/fundraiser to show the Board we have support. So would love a donation of $5 or more: https://bit.ly/2T5asb4

We need volunteers

We are collecting a list of volunteers and what you would be willing to do to help. This will be used to show the Commissioners how serious we are and how much backing we have.

Email us to tell us how you can help: SavetheTabernacle@gmail.com.

Pledge your Support

Pledge your Support NOW

On January 27th, 2020, the Save the Oakdale Tabernacle pledge drive was started!  We know, it's sort of late, but we honestly didn't know that we should be collecting private dollars. Call us naive if you must, but we thought the Park Board was on the path of seeing the value of keeping the Tabernacle. When you've paid for studies to keep it and you've gathered input from the community and you are not talking about it in meetings, it seemed they would "come around". Then we heard a rumor, we didn't collect private money. It's our fault the building is being demolished.

So, that's why we initiated the pledge drive. If it will make the difference and show the Commissioners of the Freeport Park Board that the Save the Tabernacle group is, it's worth a try.

At this time no money but a pledge is all we are asking for. It's a vote of support to save it for future generations to enjoy.
